Behind the Scenes- Boho Buffalo

Tell us a bit about yourself..

My name is Emma-Jayne and I am a surface designer born and raised in South Wales, UK.

Boho Buffalo (originally Meraki) was born from travel experiences and a lifelong passion for bohemian and country western fashion.

Having been an Art teacher & lecturer for 15 years I was determined to leave the profession and follow my dreamof creating a luxury brand of accessories. Being diagnosed with ME in 2017 was the catalyst for re-launching my small scale accessories business 'Meraki'.  Meraki was a hobby that began many years ago from my bedroom desk, as an escapism from teaching. It has now grown into Boho Buffalo; a retail brand that supplies shops & galleries around the UK and now sells online.

What inspired you to create "Boho Buffalo"?

I was introduced to leather work in Marrakesh, where I spent an entire night in a basement watching young brothers making bags for the family to sell at the market the following morning.
The essence of the product emerged after two years of living on the island of Mallorca. The intense beauty of the island and modern boho chic of spanish women was both intoxicating and inspiring.

When I arrived in Mallorca I discovered it was easy to source leathers from the many shoe factories on the island. One very entertaining night I met a father and daughter at their rural farm where they were selling offcuts, after being made redundant from a local factory. I was chased up the path by two ostriches and three dogs & was greeted by an elderly man in his speedos who had the most amazing array of leathers in amongst the crazy clutter of his barn ...the adventure began there!

The dramatic coastline of Wales had always been a significant inspiration in my work but the vibrant bohemian vibe of Ibiza & Mallorcan beaches impelled me to incorporate more embellishment and playful colour / pattern.

My personal obsession with all things cowgirl and boho-chic have instinctively influenced the style of the pieces, which I design with specific type of person & lifestyle in mind.

Travels in the USA, Far East and Morocco are clearly illustrated in the collections which incorporate unusual materials and components, ethically sourced from around the globe.
I now  work from a studio in Cardiff Bay with the assistance of my three legged cat Lois (who also experienced they joys of Spain, but luckily missed out on Speedo man!).

I felt very strongly that I wanted to base Boho Buffalo in my home country, promoting Wales and it's talentfrom a city that I have always loved. The Bay area is a special place that keeps me inspired & grateful to be home.

I hope to grow the collections along with future travels whilst bringing a ray of sunshine to everyones' day with my lovingly made pieces.

  • It’s so important for us to be showcasing great British manufacturing here at the Home & Gift show. The footfall here is massive and it’s an opportunity for people to see the products, hear the story and for us to be able to show first-hand the quality of British manufacturing we have embraced here with the homeware and cooking range.

  • We love the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere at Harrogate. It’s a must for buyers and a showcase for Yorkshire hospitality. We always enjoy the whole show experience, seeing new faces and meeting with some of our regular suppliers in person.
